An American-based Nigerian professor, Toyin Falola, has added voice to the call for the decentralisation of power and local government autonomy, describing it as a sure way to grassroots development.

Falola said decentralisation of power and resources would foster regional development, adding that empowering local governments would reduce administrative costs and stimulate localised economic growth.

He also identified public participation and civic engagement as critical drivers of Nigeria’s growth and development.

Speaking at the 2024 convocation lecture of Benue State University, Makurdi, on Friday, Falola stressed the transformative potential of grassroots involvement in governance and policy implementation.

He said, “Nigeria’s overly centralised government hinders local growth and creates an over-reliance on the federal system. Decentralisation is not just about governance; it’s about creating opportunities for communities to thrive independently.”
