Processes Underway In Taraba To Make Gashaka Gumti Park UNESCO World Heritage Site

Taraba State Government says it will provide all the needed support for ongoing procedures to elevate Gashaka Gumti National Park to the status of United Nation’s Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO world heritage site.

The state Deputy Governor, Aminu Alkali who stated this was speaking when he received UNESCO’s World Heritage Volunteers initiative team in Jalingo, the State capital.

The Deputy Governor Aminu Alka the State Government’s passion to invest in the tourism sector, he assured of every support needed in elevating the status of the Gumti National Park.

He expressed the State Government’s passion to invest in the tourism sector.

The State Commissioner for Heritage and Eco-tourism Joseph Nagombe said Taraba is one of the four states selected for the project, and with all criteria met, the Gashaka Gumti National park should be a UNESCO world heritage site by the year 2025.

The Gashaka Gumti National park in Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba State has been on the tentative list of UNESCO for about 20 years now.

The park which is the largest in Nigeria has been a hub for tourists in the state, despite the threat to wild life conservation by poaching and other human activities.

The Taraba State Government had received the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Initiative members as part of the procedures required to uplift the national park to a world heritage status.

Tourist attraction sites expected to be visited by the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers initiative team include the Gashaka Gumti National park, the chappal wadi mountain which is the highest in Nigeria, and the Mambilla Plateau.
