The Independent National Electoral Commission has been enjoined to eliminate corrupt officials among its staff for free, fair, and credible elections to be achieved.

A former National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria, Yabagi Sani, who said this during an interview with Instantnews Saturday stated that the act of compromise by some INEC employees had been one of the major problems of the electoral process.

He stated this against the backdrop of disputed outcomes of previous elections while the electoral umpire prepares ahead of the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states this year.

According to him, INEC must perform credibly for Nigerians to have confidence in it.
He said, “There is nothing that will gladden our hearts more than to have free, fair, and credible elections. INEC is the lead agency, though it is not only INEC, it also has to do with other security agencies.

“We want INEC to make sure that their staff members do not compromise. The commission should rid the system of bad eggs because that has been one of the problems we have been facing in this country.

“INEC has shown in the past that they are not happy with the bad eggs they are having among them. We want them to perform credibly, demonstrate and earn the confidence they want from Nigerians.”

On his part, a political analyst and the Vice President, Nigeria Political Science Association, Prof Makodi Bierrenu-Nnabugwu, said Nigeria would continue to suffer setbacks if INEC failed to do the right thing by delivering credible polls.

He attributed the unavailability of a reliable system to check the excesses of INEC as one of the problems affecting the electoral process.
