Jigawa To Cultivate 150,000 Hectares Of Wheat

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has announced plans by his administration to cultivate 150,000 hectares of wheat next farming season.

The governor, who spoke in Dutse, the state capital, on Wednesday, when he received the Africa Development Bank delegation, disclosed plans to expand the programme to other crops in 2025.

The Federal Government had allocated 40,000 hectares of land for wheat farming to Jigawa State under the initiative to enhance food security in Nigeria where over 10,000 farmers are supported with agricultural inputs for effective farming.

This is contained in a statement by Special Assistant Media to the governor, Zainab Ringim, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday.

Namadi expressed the commitment and determination of the government to improve food security in the state and the county in general.

Ringim, in the statement, said, “Governor Namadi further stated that the only way to move people out of poverty is through the development of agriculture.”

The statement said the governor lauded President Bola Tinubu for initiating various agricultural intervention programmes since the inception of his administration.

She further disclosed that the governor also commended “the initiative of feed the African initiative established by the African Development Bank, assuring that government will monitor all the inputs interventions to ensure adequate use for the attainment of greater Jigawa.”

As contained in the statement, earlier, the leader of the delegation, Dr. Martings Fregnen, said the visit was aimed at intimating the governor on the activities of the bank to agree on the areas of continued collaboration.

Fregnen said the National Agricultural Development Scheme will be supported in the areas of irrigated land, farmers’ financing and the provision of opportunities for the young people for the development of the region.

Other key stakeholders appreciated the support and commitments of the Jigawa State Government and assured a willingness to maintain the cordial relationship between the two parties.
