Ogun Commissioner Seeks Judge’s Support For Gender-Based Violence Victims

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye has sought the assistance of the Ogun State Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, in getting quick justice for victims of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Adeleye who made this call when she visited the Chief Judge in her office, according to a statement, on Monday, revealed that getting quick justice for victims of various sexual assaults would help a lot in achieving deterrence for the antisocial behaviours.

The Commissioner was quoted to have commended the Chief Judge for the pedestal of the judicial service of the state in the implementation of laws, dispensation of justice and protection of the constitution, explaining that, the purpose of the visit was to plead for a prompt response on cases of SGBV and family matters, while seeking for due diligence in adoption process.

The statement said, “Adeleye who advocated for a special court for SGBV cases as the only way a survivor could get justice, also said there should be documentation of sexual assault offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.”

Speaking during the visit, the Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, reiterated the Judiciary’s commitment to ensuring that necessary legal advice and support are provided through legal aids, to ensure the rights of individuals are protected, while setting standards for equitable enforcement of the law, to reduce societal vices.

Explaining the delay of some cases on SGBV and family matters, Hon. Justice Dipeolu urged Social Welfare Officers to brace up to their duties and endeavour to enlighten parents, relatives and witnesses on the need to stand by the survivors during court proceedings, as it is the only way a victim could get justice.

Speaking on child adoption cases, Justice Dipeolu pointed out that loose ends should be tightened and due diligence carried out at both the judicial and ministry for the safety and welfare of the children.
