Students Seek Military’s Help To Secure Varsities

The National Association of University Students has sought the collaboration of the Nigerian Army towards ensuring security across tertiary institutions nationwide.

The Campus Monitoring Committee of NAUS led by its Chairman, Osahon Destiny, in a press statement on Friday, sought military support at the Nigeria Army 4 Brigade headquarters in Edo State, to foster a collaborative and productive relationship between university students and the military as part of efforts to enhance the security and peace of the state and nation at large.

Cult clashes and gun violence caused over 180 fatalities in Edo State between January 2021 and December 2023, a report by the Partnerships Initiatives in the Niger Delta revealed

The tally showed that Benin City had the highest number of deaths with 97 people, followed by Ogbegbe with 31;  Ewu-Esan Local Government Area with over 13 persons; Egbeta with three deaths;  and Ekpoma with two deaths. Other 34 deaths are spread across other local government areas in the state.

In December 2023, Edo State Government commenced the training of 1,500 operatives of the state Security Vigilante Network as part of efforts to tackle security challenges in the state

Destiny, who congratulated the Commander of  4 Brigade Nigerian Army headquarters in the state, Gen Ebenezer Oduyebo, on his recent deployment, called for the security of Nigerian students across various campuses.

Highlighting the key areas of collaboration between the university students’ leadership and the Nigerian Army in the state, Destiny sought collaboration to “Address prevailing security issues and seeking insights for enhancing safety, establishing protocols for crisis management and emergency responses; exploring opportunities for the Army to actively engage with the university community; establishing channels for regular information sharing to promptly address security concerns.”

Oduyebo thanked the leadership of the student community for their visit and their decision to collaborate with the Nigerian Army.
